About the Project:
MitoQ is a global leader in mitochondrial health supplements, offering research-backed products designed to support cellular function. Alongside a comprehensive CRO audit of their website, MitoQ engaged KARL Mission to conduct a full email audit.
The goal was to optimize email marketing across the entire customer journey, including onboarding workflows, transactional emails, and monthly newsletters. By providing actionable recommendations, we aimed to enhance user experience, engagement, and conversion rates, supporting sustained growth and customer loyalty in a competitive market.

Mission:
Conduct a comprehensive email audit to:
- Increase website traffic, purchases, and subscriptions
- Improve customer engagement and retention
- Strengthen brand trust and loyalty
Process:
We followed a data-driven approach, analyzing metrics across email performance and user behavior to identify actionable improvements.
1. Data Analysis: We began by analyzing MitoQ’s existing email programs, including the onboarding series, monthly newsletters, transactional emails, and abandoned cart sequences. For the onboarding journey, we examined the various email flows for different user paths, including purchase, subscription, repurchase, re-engagement, and cancellation. We evaluated open rates, click-through rates, and engagement behavior to identify friction points and opportunities for improvement. For the monthly newsletter, we analyzed subject line performance, content engagement, click patterns, and overall open and click-through rates to identify which content resonated most with users.
2. Competitor Benchmark: We conducted a comprehensive review of both direct and indirect competitors to provide a comparative perspective. This included analyzing onboarding flows, newsletters, transactional emails, abandoned cart emails, and feedback emails. By evaluating industry trends, content strategies, and engagement techniques, we were able to identify opportunities for differentiation and uncover best practices that could be applied to MitoQ’s email programs.
3. Email Flow Recommendations: Based on the insights from our data analysis and competitor benchmark, we developed recommendations for the structure, timing, and content of the email sequences. This included suggestions for the number of emails, spacing, messaging priorities, and sequencing to create a more coherent and engaging user experience that drives conversions.
4. Email Design Recommendations: We created Figma mockups for the onboarding series, monthly newsletter, transactional emails, and abandoned cart emails. These mockups incorporated visual improvements such as scannable content blocks, mobile-first design, videos, infographics, and clear call-to-action buttons. We also included A/B testing ideas to validate design and content changes for maximum performance.
5. A/B Testing Roadmap: All findings from the data analysis, competitor benchmark, and design recommendations were consolidated into a comprehensive A/B testing roadmap. This document outlined contextual observations from analytics and user behavior, design and content hypotheses, test ideas, mockups, and prioritization of actions. By integrating all insights, MitoQ received a single, actionable plan to optimize email performance across the full customer journey.
Solution:
Onboarding Series
Key recommendations included:
- Optimize emails for mobile-first design to improve readability and engagement.
- Incorporate more visual content such as graphs, infographics, icons, GIFs, and images to make information more scannable and digestible.
- Highlight trust-building elements including scientific evidence, expert endorsements, user reviews, customer stories, and habit-building tips.
- Use buttons instead of text links for key CTAs to increase click-through rates.
- Integrate videos where possible as they showed higher engagement than static images.

Monthly Newsletter
As part of the audit, we analyzed the performance of MitoQ’s monthly newsletters to provide actionable insights they could use for future campaigns. We examined subject line patterns to identify which approaches drove the highest open rates, and we analyzed engagement across content pillars to understand which types of content resonated most with users. This analysis was compiled into a clear resource that MitoQ can reference when planning and creating future newsletters.
Based on these insights, we recommended additional optimizations:
- Improve mobile optimization to increase readability and engagement.
- Incorporate more videos and animated content (GIFs) to make newsletters visually engaging.
- Use clear and prominent call-to-action buttons, placed strategically so they remain visible above the fold.
- Enhance visual clarity by differentiating subtitles and links using distinct colors, rather than the existing uniform red.
- Introduce seasonal content to capitalize on holidays and events, which supports emotional engagement, limited-time offers, and relevance with subscribers.
Newsletter Design Mockup Highlights:
- Keep the opening message short, pulling key information from blogs to create teasers.
- Include top links to strategic pages for easier navigation.
- Give each newsletter a theme and title to create an engaging header.
- Place prominent CTA buttons for higher visibility and click-through.
- Include a subscription push at the bottom, supported by a testimonial to strengthen brand trust.

Abandoned Cart Emails
- Include persuasive content to encourage users to complete their purchase, such as reminders of items left in the cart, product benefits, and customer reviews.
- Reinforce trust with scientific evidence and brand messaging.
- Use prominent call-to-action buttons and strategically placed visuals to guide users toward conversion.

Transactional Emails
- Include clear order summaries for transparency and usability.
- Humanize the experience with friendly imagery of customer service staff.
- Reinforce brand identity through consistent visuals, tone of voice, and messaging.
- Leverage emails to encourage repeat purchases and promote related products.
- Provide easy access to customer support through CTA buttons or links.
- Position the product as something exciting for users to receive, using images, messaging, and tone that generate anticipation.
Conclusion:
Through a detailed analysis of email performance data, user engagement patterns, and competitor approaches, KARL Mission equipped MitoQ with practical recommendations to strengthen onboarding flows, newsletters, and transactional emails. Our work emphasized how subscribers read, scan, and interact with emails, ensuring that key messages, calls to action, and trust signals are surfaced quickly and clearly. By aligning content structure, visual hierarchy, and timing with real engagement behavior, the recommendations support higher interaction, improved conversions, and long-term customer loyalty across the email channel.
